Saturday Night Takeaway fans baffled as show offers week off work in ill-timed segment – Irish Mirror

Saturday Night Takeaway fans couldn’t help see the “irony” in this week’s show, as an ill-timed pre-recorded segment aired.

Stephen Mulhern was back with his hilarious gameshow, giving people the chance to win a week off work.

He turns up at a random workplace full of unsuspecting workers, before presenting a series of challenges.

The person who completes all the challenges successfully is given a whole week off work, approved by SNT.

But as the show returned this weekend despite concern because of its live studio audience, amid the Coronavirus outbreak in the UK, the new show segment also made a comeback.

Fans couldn’t work out why it was airing though, amid the current news regarding COVID-19 and the spike in cases and deaths in the UK, and worldwide.

With confirmed cases now hitting over 1,000 and deaths reaching at least 21 – not to mention claims actual case figures could be beyond 10,000 – different advice and potential restrictions have been revealed.

Self-isolation for anyone with COVID-19 symptoms or even a cold is one measure, with those not battling the illness also told to avoid large gatherings.

Some companies are allowing workers to work from home whether that be for isolation purposes, or because they’d prefer not to travel.

With the segment already having been filmed, it’s likely it was carried out before the Coronavirus pandemic began causing chaos.

Viewers were quick to take to Twitter though, confused that they offered the prize of getting a week off work amid self-isolation having an impact on jobs across the country – and with several workers already taking time away from work.

One fan tweeted: “Everyone can play Win a Week off Work…. it’s called self isolate.”

Another tweeted: “The irony of being able to win a week off work on @itvtakeaway at the moment.”

A third added: “Win a week of work most are working from home.”

This was echoed by a fourth fan who said: “Win a week off work as the company is closing soon anyway when the whole country also gets a week off work.”

It came after Ant and Dec decided to go ahead with the live show, with a full studio audience, despite calls for people to distance themselves from large gatherings – with some viewers not agreeing with the choice.

Saturday Night Takeaway airs Saturdays at 7pm on ITV.
